Athinios port or simply Athinios is the primary ferry port of Santorini located approximately 10 km south of the capital Fira. It is the only port on Santorini with regular passenger ferry services linking the island to Piraeus, Cyclades and Crete. Athinios is surrounded by steep, multi-colored volcanic cliffs, along which a road winds to the top, zigzagging backwards and forward.In 2003, in the area between the harbor of Athinios and the Alonaki cape, the Danish geologist Tom Pfeifer was found buried in the volcanic ash, an olive branch. The radiodetermination of this branch led to the placement of the destructive eruption that created the caldera of Santorini in the period 1627-1600 BC. On July 4, 2007, a three-member scientific team conducted an excavation at the same site and brought to light an olive branch of 2 meters long and 20 cm in diameter, olive leaves and a ceramic late-cycladic period. The fact that branches belonging to at least three different trees have been found leads to the conclusion that there was an olive grove in that part. Some of the findings are exhibited at the Museum of Minerals and Fossils in Perissa, Santorini.
